The International Day of Families on May 15th is an official United Nations day of observance. This day of action was proclaimed by the United Nations with a resolution in 1993 and takes place annually in May.

Family education in focus

As Bremen's specialist agency for family education and Bremen's central family portal, the Bremen Family Network (familiennetz bremen) is focusing on the important topic of "family education" on this year's International Day of Families. A series on its Instagram channel explores the question, "What exactly is family education?" Parents who have participated in family education programs in the city of Bremen share their personal experiences. A street survey reveals that family education is not as unknown as one might think.

Family education as a strong role of the German Red Cross

The Instagram series also features family education programs from the German Red Cross (DRK) Bremen branch, such as HIPPY and e:du. Andreas Ott, a board member of the DRK in Bremen, explains in an interview why family education plays a traditional role within the DRK. Birgit Grob-Eitmann, head of the e:du program at the DRK Bremen branch, speaks frankly and explains why guidance and support are so important for parents on the "adventure of raising children" and how this support can be successful.
