The guide "Growing Older in Bremen 2025/2026" is available at many public locations
From the services offered by social centers to information on preventive home visits and further education opportunities for seniors, to the directory of residences, the guide provides an overview of many topics that are important for older people in Bremen on around 140 pages.
Comprehensive edition with eleven chapters
The 2025/2026 edition, featuring eleven chapters on topics such as education, hobbies and travel, nutrition and health, finances, retirement planning, and long-term care benefits, has just been published. Senator for Social Affairs Dr. Claudia Schilling stated: “Older people in Bremen have access to a wide range of services. With this guide, we want to support them and encourage them to take advantage of these services. Staying active for as long as possible is the best protection against loneliness. Community centers, civic centers, and other meeting places offer a variety of opportunities.”
Annotated directory of residences provides an overview
A central theme of the brochure is housing. It lists information on the wide range of housing options and services available, and the annotated directory of residences provides an initial overview of existing care facilities and assisted living options. "We are making consistent progress to enable senior citizens in Bremen to actively participate in social life," said Özlem Ünsal, Senator for Construction, Mobility and Urban Development.
“To achieve this, we are creating accessible and affordable housing options in familiar surroundings and investing in easily accessible, barrier-free public transportation. We are specifically promoting senior citizen shared living arrangements, as they counteract loneliness and facilitate access to care and support services. Together with all participating institutions, the Senate is ensuring that self-determined living remains possible in old age,” said Senator Ünsal.
Support on the topic of "care"
"Growing Older in Bremen" is not only aimed at older Bremen residents themselves. Relatives will also find contact details for relevant people and information on topics such as care standards and counseling services. "There are many services available for older people, those in need of care, and their relatives in Bremen. The brochure is an excellent guide to the right addresses and contact persons. I encourage you to ask questions – especially regarding care-related issues, there are plenty of support options," said Senator for Health Claudia Bernhard.
Where can I get the guide?
The guide is now available free of charge at many public locations, such as the town hall, local offices, service centers, community centers, care support centers, and city libraries. It can also be downloaded from the website of the Senator for Social Affairs.
