Model project now also in Blumenthal
The successful Bremen pilot project "Study Friends" is being expanded: It will now also be implemented in the Blumenthal district. The corresponding cooperation agreement has been signed by the parties involved.
Bringing students and schoolchildren together
The project places students in shared apartments in neighborhoods with special development needs – in return, the "Study Friends" volunteer to support local schoolchildren. In Blumenthal, their work will primarily take place at a primary school in the neighborhood. The Gewoba housing association provides the accommodation rent-free, and pedagogical support is provided through a newly established volunteer center.
Strengthening local cohesion and prospects
Özlem Ünsal, Senator for Construction, Mobility and Urban Development, emphasizes: “'Study Friends' is a win for everyone: for the children who receive support – and for the neighborhoods where education, community cohesion and local opportunities are strengthened. Blumenthal in particular needs such targeted initiatives. That's why I'm delighted that we are continuing this successful model together with Gewoba.”
High importance for Bremen
“Social neighborhood development and social cohesion are of great importance to us. Our neighborhoods thus become a shared space for shaping the future towards greater equality of opportunity and participation in our districts with special needs – this social project makes a particular contribution to this,” added the Bremen Senator for Construction.
Already 16 places in Gröpelingen
Sascha Karolin Aulepp, Senator for Children and Education, says: “'Study Friends' impressively demonstrates how university students support school pupils as dedicated mentors in their own neighborhoods, where they themselves live. This not only strengthens academic success but also the sense of community – education takes place here in a very practical and personal way.” With today's launch in Blumenthal, the pilot project continues to grow: There are already 16 places available in Gröpelingen. The new location marks the first time that Bremen's northern districts have been included in the program.
