To mark International Children's Rights Day on November 20th, another "Children's Rights Square" was officially opened in Bremen. The Bremen Child Protection Association and the KUBO art center, together with many partners, had invited the public to a colorful, participatory festival at the Gröpelingen City Library.
Focus: Children's rights and environmental protection
The focus was on children's rights, with a particular emphasis on the importance of environmental protection. Sixth-grade students from the West Comprehensive School presented the results of an art project dealing with children's ecological rights.
Students from Gröpelingen create a podcast
They created a five-episode podcast covering topics such as "a roof over their heads," "trash," and "participation." At the end of each episode, the children make demands, including a desire for more free games and greater environmental protection. The podcast episodes can be listened to here.
Senator Moosdorf: Advocating for children's rights
The project is funded by the Senator for the Environment and the BINGO Environmental Lottery. Senator Moosdorf not only praised the children's commitment but also emphasized how important it is to her to advocate for children's rights.
“I am impressed by the creativity and commitment of the children. Their voices must be heard, especially when it comes to protecting the environment and thus their future,” said Moosdorf.
Three places for children's rights
The new square on Lindenhofstraße in Gröpelingen is located on Vonovia land right next to the city library. It is now another place that raises awareness of children's rights among the general public and simultaneously promotes a sustainable future.
Also in the Bürgerpark and in Huchting
To ensure that children's rights are respected and implemented in Bremen, the Bremen Child Protection Association makes them visible and tangible in everyday life. Following the inauguration of the first Bremen Children's Rights Square in Bürgerpark in November 2019, the second square was inaugurated in Huchting in 2022. Now, a Children's Rights Square has been established in Gröpelingen.
