Low-income families can now apply for the schoolbag campaign run by the Caritas Foundation's AHoi fund and the Zeisner Foundation. Parents of children starting school in Bremen in late summer are eligible to participate.
“The first requests came in weeks ago,” said Caritas Director Martin Böckmann. “The high demand doesn’t surprise us. After all, the cost of living remains high and savings are often depleted. Providing school supplies for the start of the school year – school bags, gym bags, pencil cases, pens, notebooks, etc. – is expensive. The funds from the education and participation package are generally insufficient.”
Raffle of 100 school backpacks
Families can download the application form for a schoolbag set from the Caritas AHoi Foundation Fund website at www.ahoi-caritas-bremen.de . The application also specifies which documents must be submitted by April 30, 2024. Social workers will then review the applications and draw a total of 100 schoolbags from among the eligible families. The families will be notified if they are selected and will be informed of the time and location for distribution.
“We are delighted that the Zeisner Foundation is supporting the project this year with €8,000,” said Caritas Director Martin Böckmann. “This will allow 100 children to experience a carefree start to the crucial phase of their education.” Patricia Zeisner, a member of the Zeisner Foundation's board, added: “Through our private foundation, we want to give young people in the Bremen region the opportunity for a successful future. Education is the foundation for this – that's why we are happy to support this project.”

The Caritas AHoi Foundation Fund was established in 2019 and supports people in need living in Bremen. AHoi stands for General Assistance – open and individualized. Support is provided quickly and without complications. This is the fourth time the schoolbag campaign has taken place.
The private Zeisner Foundation was established in Grasberg at the beginning of 2011. The founders set themselves the goal of providing financial support to disadvantaged children and young people.
