Since April 2025, the German Red Cross (DRK) has been offering a new mobility service in the Bremen-Obervieland district. The DRK neighborhood bus transports elderly people and those with limited mobility, accompanied by a friend or family member, to shopping, the cemetery, the hairdresser, and other destinations of their choosing.

Safe and individual transport in the district

The neighborhood bus provides safe and personalized transportation within the district. Experienced drivers and qualified attendants transport seniors to their desired destinations. The bus runs once a week and can be requested by passengers, family members, or doctors' offices.

Destinations in the residential area are easily accessible

For medically necessary transport, a doctor's office can issue a prescription (colloquially known as a "taxi voucher"). The German Red Cross (DRK) minibus can easily reach even densely populated residential areas and provides safe and comfortable transportation, even in extreme weather conditions.

Restricted mobility has far-reaching consequences

Limited mobility often leads to social and health disadvantages. Without reliable transportation options, doctor's appointments, shopping trips, or other important errands become difficult or are avoided altogether.

This impairs the independence of those affected and leads to everyday needs increasingly having to be taken over by relatives or care services, which means an additional burden for them.

DRK neighborhood bus closes gap

Isolation and the risk of social loneliness increase when people can no longer leave their neighborhoods independently and social interactions decrease. This is precisely where the German Red Cross (DRK) neighborhood bus comes in. Following the launch of this innovative project for the mobility of older people in Walle, the DRK bus is now also operating in Obervieland.

Facts about the new German Red Cross (DRK) transport service:

  • Times : The neighborhood bus runs every Tuesday in Obervieland and every Thursday in Walle, each time from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Route : There is a predetermined route through the district.
  • Cost: The German Red Cross (DRK) Bremen branch would appreciate a donation of €2 from passengers. However, this is not a requirement for riding the train.

The German Red Cross (DRK) transport service is happy to provide information about its services to anyone interested; please call 0421 3403 333. Those wishing to register can also do so by calling the transport service at this number.
