Staircases exclude people from participating in public life. That's why the Bremen State Working Group for Self-Help for Disabled People (LAGS) .

50 mobile ramps for greater inclusion

To break down barriers and raise awareness of the inclusion of wheelchair users, the Bremen Self-Help Association (LAG Selbsthilfe Bremen) received a five-figure sum from the Senator for Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation. The money will be used to purchase fifty portable ramps. These ramps can be made available to restaurants, shops, and cultural institutions in Bremen that have one or two steps at their entrance.

Quick solution for wheelchair users

The ramps can be set up and taken down as needed, providing access for wheelchair users. Institutions can use a window sticker to indicate the presence of the ramp. These foldable, portable ramps are distributed by Wheelramp and are available in two lengths: 120 cm (for steps up to approximately 20 cm high) and 150 cm (for steps up to 30 cm high). The ramps weigh approximately 9 kg and 12 kg respectively and can be quickly unfolded and stored away.

Determine needs

As a first step, the Bremen State Association for Self-Help (LAG Selbsthilfe Bremen) wants to determine the need and identify locations where a mobile ramp is feasible, practical, and necessary. Local expertise is required for this: Suggestions for locations where such a mobile ramp is currently lacking or needed can be submitted to LAGS either by postcard or via an online form. Anyone can submit suggestions, including residents, associations, advisory boards, and other institutions.

On-site discussions

In a second step, it will be necessary to speak with the respective restaurant owners or operators of the respective shops or facilities and clarify whether a ramp can be provided there and if so, how it can best be installed and what else is required so that it can be used properly.

This dialogue is conducted by the LAGS (Local Action Groups), but local offices, business associations, and neighborhood management offices are also in contact with the respective business owners. Ideally, the ramp is delivered directly to the business.

Many ramps, fewer barriers

A standardized window sticker, included with the sticker, indicates the availability of a ramp in the respective location. LAGS welcomes the installation of as many ramps as possible, thus reducing barriers and promoting greater inclusion.
