Starting a family through adoption is both an opportunity and an adventure. In this magazine, "Insights into Adoption: Experiences and Backgrounds," published in 2024 by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ), adoptive parents, birth parents, and adoptees offer insights into their lives. Experts address current issues and developments. The magazine also includes practical tips, such as how adoptive parents can talk to their child about their adoption story.
Growing up in a safe and nurturing environment
“Becoming a parent and starting a family is an adventure. This is perhaps even more true for adoptive parents and their children. Whether a child is born and adopted in Germany, whether they come from abroad, whether they grow up with two mothers or two fathers, or whether they are adopted by a stepparent – each of these adventures is unique. But all adoptions have one thing in common: they are always about ensuring that a child can grow up well and safely in a family. The needs and well-being of the child must always be the central focus,” said Lisa Paus, Member of the German Bundestag and Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
Speaking openly about adoption
In the magazine's foreword, she adds: "Adopted children are truly wanted children for their new parents. And yet, they remain connected to their families of origin. Knowing their own history, their own roots, is important for their development. That's why it's good that we talk openly about adoption – within families and in our society. This magazine contributes to that." The magazine provides information, experiences, and background on the diverse topics surrounding adoption. Experts have their say, as do families who share their everyday lives and experiences. Those who wish to adopt a child or are facing the decision of giving a child up for adoption will gain initial insights from the magazine. For those just beginning their journey, the stories make it clear: You are not alone on this path.
