The Midwifery Center North in Vegesack offers care to women and expectant families in the city's districts, including prenatal care, advice and support for pregnancy-related discomfort, postpartum care, and breastfeeding and nutrition counseling. Courses began at the end of February.
The midwifery center in Bremen North has now been opened by Claudia Bernhard, Senator for Health, Women and Consumer Protection, together with Jörg Angerstein, board member of the Hans-Wendt-Foundation, and the center's coordinator, Natalie Luke.
Healthcare for women in Bremen North is to be improved
During the opening ceremony, Senator Claudia Bernhard emphasized the great importance of the new midwifery center:
"With over 1,100 births, there is a great need for outpatient care for families living in Bremen's north. This need cannot currently be met by self-employed midwives. With the midwifery center in Vegesack, we want to improve healthcare for women in Bremen's north. Easily accessible services in the neighborhoods, such as here under one roof with a pediatrician's office and a gynecologist's practice, are a key building block on the path to equal access to healthcare."
Entitlement to midwifery care
Midwife Natalie Luke, coordinator of the North Midwifery Center, also knows how important easily accessible services are for (expectant) mothers: "Many people aren't even aware that every woman is entitled to midwifery care during pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and breastfeeding. Statutory health insurance covers these services in full. With our team – currently three midwives and an administrative assistant – we want to provide attentive support to women from the beginning of pregnancy until the end of their child's first year, both at home and in our center's facilities."
Jörg Angerstein, board member of the Hans-Wendt-Foundation, emphasized the advantages the center offers the midwives working there: "Working as a team allows freelance midwives to plan their shifts more reliably. In addition, there is more time for actual patient care, as our administrative staff takes over the administrative tasks, thus significantly relieving the midwives of this burden."
Prime location in Vegesack
The Midwifery Center North is located in the medical center at Reeder-Bischoff-Straße 28 in the Vegesack town center, between a pediatrician's office and a gynecologist's office. Commissioned by the Senator for Health, Women and Consumer Protection, the Hans-Wendt Foundation operates not only the Midwifery Center North, Bremen's third midwifery center, but also the centers in Bremen East and West.
