As in many other German states, the shortage of skilled workers in Bremen is currently preventing the provision of sufficient childcare places. Bremen is therefore exploring all available options to enable already qualified professionals to work in Bremen's childcare centers: On June 11, 2024, the Senate approved a corresponding draft amendment to the Bremen Childcare Place Act (BremAOG) proposed by the Senator for Children and Education, effective at the earliest possible date, and on September 10, 2024, resolved to forward the draft to the Bremen Parliament (Stadtbürgerschaft) with a request for a vote at its next session.

Amendment to the Place of Admission Act (BremAOG) adopted

The Senator for Children and Education, Sascha Karolin Aulepp, expressly welcomes this decision: “This ensures that in Bremen, early childhood educators with young children can work in our daycare centers and know their children are well cared for. This means that for every child in care, for example in the over-3 age group, up to 19 other children can be accommodated. This is good for the children, leads to greater reliability for families, and allows those affected to work in their profession and better reconcile family and career.”

Priority admission of children

The amendment to Section 6 of the Bremen Child Day Care Act of 2014 ensures preferential admission of children of pedagogical professionals employed in child day care facilities in the city of Bremen and of childminders employed there as second staff or in large day care facilities over other children.
